When you hear the term “staycation” what comes to mind? In past years, it probably meant something very different than what the word has come to mean in 2020. 2020 has been a difficult year, during that time many people have taken to making the most of their home and outdoor space. In this blog, we are going to discuss a few things you can do to make the most of your outdoor space and create an oasis for yourself.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are a beautiful way to create a focal point for any outdoor space. Not only do they give the idea of a destination, but they also create a sense of gathering and community. Fire pits can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose. One thing to consider when thinking about where to place your fire pit is the traffic flow. Some people will place their fire pit right in the middle of their backyard space. While that might look beautiful, it cuts down the ability to move around the backyard and gives an overall “choppy” feel to the space. If your backyard will be designed in phases, give proper consideration to additional features you might be adding down the road. If possible, have a whole plan for your backyard in mind before starting out.

Seating Walls

Depending on how your backyard is laid out, making the most of seating walls could be an excellent solution to gain more seating. While having actual patio furniture is beautiful and cozy, many people find that they need more seating than what can be accomplished with patio furniture. Seating walls are also a fantastic way to divide spaces while also allowing for traffic flow.

This might seem like common sense, but the addition of beautiful planters spilling over with flowers, bushes and plants will soften the overall look and feel of your outdoor space. Planters can be built out of pavers and raised, or can be level with the ground. If you are going to be adding planters to your outdoor space, consider how free flowing lines could accentuate the curves of your backyard and draw the eye in. While straight lines absolutely have their place, consider the alternative.

Outdoor Kitchen

Isn’t this a dream for many? Given the beautiful weather we have, it seems reasonable to take advantage of cooking outdoors as much as possible. Outdoor kitchens (like fire pits) can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. Many people find value in having sinks built into their outdoor kitchens as well as some type of mini fridge. Ultimately, it depends on how you want to use the space.

Paver Seating Walls

If you read the title of this blog post you might be a little confused – a paver seating wall? Your response would be warranted because when most people think of pavers, they think of a brick like material that make up a flat surface be it a walkway or driveway. What many people are not familiar with is that pavers come in beautiful block like forms. These stunning blocks match their driveway or walkway counterpart perfectly, but are larger and are designed for building forms. As you can see from the images below, they are a beautiful addition to any hardscape design.

Paver seating walls are a fantastic design solution for many reasons

  1. If you have a larger space, it is good to visually break up the space in distinct areas. As any designer will tell you, the key to a good design is to have designated areas of living. For example, a clearly outlined seating area, cooking area etc. The way that these spaces relate to each other are what make for a cohesive design. Paver Seating Walls are a great way to help visually create distinct areas without visually blocking off spaces.
  2. If you entertain, seating can be a problem. – Especially with a normal size space. No one wants to have to rent dozens of chairs every time a bbq is thrown. Paver seating walls are a great way to add tons of seating room, without disrupting the flow of traffic or overall design. While most use paver seating walls by themselves, you can also encourage your guests to get comfy by placing pillows on the top of the seating wall.

If you have any questions about how a seating wall might transform your outdoor space, we would be more than happy to meet with you and discuss your space. Paver Seating Walls

One of the main issues people struggle with when designing their backyard is how to create adequate seating without destroying the layout and flow of a space. Additionally, it can be hard to determine how much seating should be allocated. Even if someone entertains a lot, there is always going to be a variance in the size of the gathering. If you are having a small gathering – it would look pretty strange to have twice the number of tables and chairs needed. Not to mention it would also clutter and junk up the look of the space.

This is where paver seating walls come in. Seating walls are also referred to as “half walls” and are the perfect solution for any seating dilemma. Many times seating walls can have a double function. They can serve as a retaining wall, planter or a simple division of space. To make your seating wall look more inviting for guests, simply lay out an arrangement of fun colored pillows for people to sit on. As you can see from the images below – it looks very intentional and doesn’t compete with the layout and function of the space.
