Summer Winding Down

The Labor Day weekend always seems to signal the “end” of summer – even though we officially have a couple more weeks until the start of fall. One of the best parts about living in Florida is the beautiful year round weather! And for many – the fall months are a favorite. This year has thrown so many curve balls to all of us. Vacations have been cancelled, kids have been home, school policies have been changed, and many have had changes in terms of being able to work. Given all the stress, being able to retreat to your home and backyard have probably never been more important than it is now! In this blog and in the next few to come we are going to give you some practical tips that will help you turn your backyard into a bit of an oasis – where you can relax and take a mental break from life.

Prune it!

When it comes to landscaping, many people don’t recognize how fast landscape can grow. Very quickly, plants that once looked “beautifully in place” can appear overgrown, and seem to be taking over an area. The solution is simple – bust out the clippers! Trim back the hedges, bushes and trees! If you don’t know where to start, pick one plant and determine the shape you want it to take. Consider if it is obstructing a pathway? Is it blocking other plants? You will be amazed at how a fresh pruning will instantly make your outdoor space feel more open, well kept and in general, a place you want to spend time in.

Scrub it down…

Just like the inside of your home, your patio, concrete and even the exterior of your home can get dirty and full of grime build up. Breaking out the hose is a great solution to break up a build up all these things. A push broom can help you break up dirt and grime if need be, a simple exterior window washing at the end will help your outdoor space feel brand new!

When was the last time you gave your planters a bit of attention? It is very easy to let weeds take over. Examine each planter and pull out the weeds – a simple churning of the dirt will also give your flower beds a fresh and “kept” appearance.

The Perfect Space

If you are contemplating reconfiguring or redesigning your backyard, then you have stumbled onto the right blog. Here we will give you a few ideas that will help you start outlining the important functions of your soon to be new outdoor space! A good designer will help you walk through each of these questions to make sure that the final design is in line with your vision and goals.

1.) How will you use the space? This might seem obvious, but it’s also important to think long term. How will the space change as your family grows? Are you planning on entertaining in the space? Will your entertaining change over the years?

2.) What is a realistic budget? Many times, people will do a project in phases, this is very helpful financially and therefore allows the homeowner not to skimp on things that are important.

3.) What is the general feeling you want to have in the space? Are you looking to have a space that is more modern, traditional, old world?

4.) Seating… When it comes to hardscape design, seating walls are an awesome way to increase the seating in a space without the need for folding chairs. When contemplating the layout of a space, think about where seating walls would be appropriate. Seating walls serve as two functions 1.) they nicely divide up a space and 2.) they give tons of seating without cluttering an area.

Pavers vs. Stamped Concrete

The days of having boring, gray poured in place concrete are over. Now, people are using their driveways, patios, and walkways to make a design statement. Chances are you have seen both pavers and stamped concrete. And while from afar, they can seem like a very comparable product – but when you get up close, that’s when you will start to notice the difference. In this blog we are going to explore some of the reasons why we feel that pavers are a better investment than stamped concrete.

1.) Pavers are more expensive than stamped concrete

There, we said it. And unless you find a crazy good deal – it’s true. However, many people are surprised that while pavers are more expensive, it tends to be a much closer number between the two than people originally thought. When you factor in the longevity of pavers vs. concrete, the cost is substantially less than that of stamped concrete.

2.) Pavers won’t crack

We’ve all seen concrete driveways filled with cracks – once it cracks, even if it is filled, there is nothing that one can do to repair it aesthetically. Pavers on the other hand, will not crack. Because they are individually placed, the weight is dispersed, therefore when under pressure, they simply shift slightly – but won’t crack.

3.) Stains…

We’ve all done it… Changed the oil in the driveway with the thought that there would be no way we would spill anything. Or, we’ve tripped and dropped a pan full of grease which has left a lovely reminder on the driveway. When you have stamped concrete and there is a grease spot, you might as well get attached to it. Or, become creative and add other matching spots. Once it’s in the concrete, you are stuck with it. With pavers on the other hand, you can simply pop out the stained paver and replace it with a new one. The entire process is quite simple and it will leave you with an immaculate driveway with ZERO stains!

While we doubt that you needed more convincing, here are a few images to help you become a total believer!

Paver Ribbon Trim

One of the things that we love most about pavers is the flexibility of color and style. It doesn’t matter if you prefer a more old world cobblestone type effect, or if you want something more sleek and contemporary. – There are literally hundreds of pavers to choose from. In addition to the different styles, there are literally endless color and texture options to choose from as well. When it comes to selecting colors, we love designs that frame a space and make the pavers pop! One of the ways to achieve this is by having a contrasting paver ribbon that frames the space. Typically, the ribbon has been a slightly darker color of the existing pavers, but more and more we are seeing bright and vibrant contrasts. – And we have to say that we absolutely love it!

Here are a few examples:

See how the paver ribbons bring out and accentuate the pavers? We absolutely love how it draws the eye in. If you are contemplating a paver project in the near future, we would love to meet with you and discuss your needs and possible ideas. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call!

Pavers vs. Stamped Concrete

If you are looking into redesigning your hardscape, we are guessing that at some point the idea of stamped concrete crossed your mind. And really, who could blame you? Stamped concrete truly can be beautiful – but as if you hadn’t already guessed, we are partial to pavers – and here is why.

1.) Durability

Simply stated, there is no comparison between the durability of stamped concrete and that of pavers. Over time, concrete will crack – pavers on the other hand will not because of the sand that is used to hold them in place. The sand allows them to gently shift with the movement of the foundation below it. Because no stress is placed on any one particular paver, they last for decades.

2.) Options

If you love a more subdued color palette or one that is more vibrant and flamboyant – there is absolutely a paver to suit your taste. Stamped concrete on the other hand can be very limited. Colors have to blend throughout a space to work effectively, and there are far less shapes and patterns to choose from.

3.) Keeping it beautiful

We’ve all seen it – a concrete driveway with an ugly oil spill or some sort of demarcation. Unfortunately, when it comes to concrete, all you can hope for is to scrub it out. If is an oil of some type, the stain will probably not come out. With pavers, you can simply pop out the stained paver and replace it with a new one.

Summer is Here!

School is out, the temperatures are rising and summer is here! Summer is a time for backyard hangouts, BBQ’s and pool parties. What better way to spend the warm days than with friends and family?

Having a great outdoor entertaining space is crucial – especially in Florida. Here are just a few reasons why we think that gorgeous hardscape can really make or break an outdoor entertaining space!

Paver Patios – They wear well!

If you don’t believe this, all you have to do is look at the old streets of Europe. Those roads were built centuries ago and the pavers are still beautiful. Our point is that pavers are a very durable product – so you don’t have to wonder if your outdoor space will look “weathered” after a few years. Paver patios can literally last a lifetime, it’s a great investment in your home.

Seating Walls – Extra Space

For most of us, we have more friends than there are chairs to sit on outside. But, renting chairs can become expensive and cumbersome – who wants to look at a sea of folding chairs? Paver Seating Walls are a great way to divide spaces in your backyard. By creating distinct areas for sitting, you are facilitating great conversation and gatherings.

If you are considering a new hardscape design for your backyard, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’d love to meet with you, discuss your ideas and give you ours! We hope to meet you soon.

Pavers and Curb Appeal

For most, the prospect of buying a new home is an exciting one! For those that have done it before, this experience is normally coupled with the need to sell the old home. Commonly, people will say that they “knew this was home” the moment they pulled up. The reason for this? Curb appeal!

Buying a home is a very emotional experience. It’s where families are born and raised and where memories are made. Most homes have character –  sometimes, it just takes more work to find it. The first thing that most people notice is the path leading to the home. Pavers are such a beautiful material, that there is no way any other type of hardscape could compete. Pavers offer rich texture and color – and the shapes and sizes can be selected to mirror the architectural detail of the home.

Aside from their obvious beauty, pavers are incredibly durable and hardy. Unlike concrete where it can become stained or cracked within a few weeks, pavers literally can retain their beauty for decades. If you are looking to sell your home and want to “up” your price tag and curb appeal, a new paver pathway is a wise move. Studies have shown that people who have great landscape and hardscape (ultimately curb appeal) sell their house quickly, recoup their investment and even make a profit. Still not sure? Just take a look at some of these beautiful paver walkways!

Infusing a Space with Color!

When you look at beautifully maintained homes, what is the first thing that you notice? Chances are, it will be the abundant variety of color! On the flip side, what makes commercial spaces lackluster are the dull choices of colors and variety of plants used. While plants come and go, hardscape is a permanent way to make sure that your space always has beautiful color and texture.

If you have spent any time researching pavers, then one of the things that you have probably seen time and time again is how different types of pavers offer various textures. One of the valuable aspects of pavers that tend to be overlooked is that because of their texture, they are slip resistant. Typical poured in place concrete can become slippery when wet – and guess what, you as the homeowner are responsible if someone should fall. Pavers on the other hand have a rough texture which gives traction when walked upon – even when wet. Not only can the texture be a beautiful dimension to your outdoor space, but it can also be a safety factor.

Match the Style

Is your home more of a Mission style? Or is it more of a Colonial? Unlike typical gray concrete, pavers come in a wide variety of colors and styles. If you are looking for something more modern – there is a paver for that. Or, if something more antique is what you need – cobblestone pavers are perfect.

But it’s really about the color…

While the style and texture of pavers are wonderful, bottom line, it comes down to the colors. Pavers are the easiest way to permanently infuse your outdoor space with color – check out these gorgeous examples!

Pavers and Planters

If you have looked over our website, then you know how much we love the beauty of pavers. Few materials can give a space as much color, texture and style as pavers. One of our favorite uses for pavers is for planters. This may come as a surprise to many as pavers are commonly used for pathways and driveways. But, if you have ever seen a planter made out of pavers – you will understand exactly what we are talking about!

This is a great illustration of how simple adding pavers to a planter can be – but take a look at the visual impact! This walkway would seem incomplete and unfinished if the pavers didn’t outline the planter.

While these paver planters are a bit more complex than the one above, take a look at how the beautiful curves completely soften the look of this space. In addition, it adds a stunning element of visual interest that could not have been achieved otherwise.

This is a more common style of paver planter wall. Not only is this paver planter functional, but it adds tremendous beauty to this walkway. Visualize for a moment your home. What kind of curb appeal does it have? Chances are no matter what it is, it could be enhanced by beautiful planters and stunning pavers.

At Legacy Pavers we have built a reputation for being honest and also for the quality of our work. If you are considering adding to or changing the hardscape of your home, we would love to meet with you to discuss your project.

Paver Seating Walls

If you read the title of this blog post you might be a little confused – a paver seating wall? Your response would be warranted because when most people think of pavers, they think of a brick like material that make up a flat surface be it a walkway or driveway. What many people are not familiar with is that pavers come in beautiful block like forms. These stunning blocks match their driveway or walkway counterpart perfectly, but are larger and are designed for building forms. As you can see from the images below, they are a beautiful addition to any hardscape design.

Paver seating walls are a fantastic design solution for many reasons

  1. If you have a larger space, it is good to visually break up the space in distinct areas. As any designer will tell you, the key to a good design is to have designated areas of living. For example, a clearly outlined seating area, cooking area etc. The way that these spaces relate to each other are what make for a cohesive design. Paver Seating Walls are a great way to help visually create distinct areas without visually blocking off spaces.
  2. If you entertain, seating can be a problem. – Especially with a normal size space. No one wants to have to rent dozens of chairs every time a bbq is thrown. Paver seating walls are a great way to add tons of seating room, without disrupting the flow of traffic or overall design. While most use paver seating walls by themselves, you can also encourage your guests to get comfy by placing pillows on the top of the seating wall.

If you have any questions about how a seating wall might transform your outdoor space, we would be more than happy to meet with you and discuss your space. Our team of contractors and designers have multiple years of experience and we know that you will be absolutely delighted with the final outcome!
