Enjoy Being in Your Backyard

In our last blog we talked about the possibility of an outdoor space being an oasis, and an escape from daily stress. The ideal outdoor space looks very different for everyone, and will depend greatly on how you intend to use that space. For example, a family with young kids will use a space very differently than a retired couple. Before charging ahead with a backyard remodel, take some time to consider what you want your space to do for you. What types of gatherings will you have in it?

Hardscape design is a beautiful and durable way to give a space form and function. Pavers by their very nature are beautiful to look at, but will also last for years. We previously talked about outdoor kitchens and BBQ’s, in this blog we are going to take a look at seating walls and fire pits.

Seating Walls

A seating wall is just what it sounds like – a wall that also offers seating! These types of low walls can create clearly defined outdoor spaces (patio area, landscaped area) but also offer flexibility to be used as informal seating for people when gathering. The overall look and feel of seating walls can also be softened with strategic use of pillows! Can you imagine how inviting that would look and feel?

Fire Pits

What summer memory would be complete without a campfire or fire pit? There is something wonderful about the smell of the wood burning and the knowledge that another beautiful summer day has passed. One of the beautiful aspects of pavers is their design flexibility. As a result, fire pits can be designed in many shapes and sizes. Pair a beautiful fire pit with a seating wall – and now you have a backyard destination.

While seating walls and fire pits sound wonderful, if you are considering adding these design elements to your backyard, make sure you have enough space. At times people don’t take into proper consideration how much space either of these additions require. The end result can feel cramped. That being said, there is tremendous flexibility to work with many different types of spaces. Fire pits and seating walls are built to specification and can be specifically designed to suit a particular need or space.

Travertine Pavers

If you have been paying attention to trends, chances are that you have noticed an increased use of Travertine Pavers. Travertine Pavers are cut from natural stone and are thought to be one of the best materials for pool patios because of their constant cool temperature. One of the unique and desirable qualities of Travertine Pavers is the different shading and veining. Most commonly Travertine is found in shades of tan, but it can also be found in shades of gray and even a rich charcoal color. Travertine is a very porous material and is also very sensitive to different types of acids – which is why you will never see it used in kitchens or on countertops.

One aspect of Travertine Pavers that any potential homeowner should keep in mind is how porous of a material it is. For this reason, Travertine Pavers should be sealed on a regular basis. Depending on the type of sealer used, the sealer could also make the Travertine Pavers slippery when wet. If a sealer that penetrates the stone is used, the paver will be  able to absorb the water thus making it less slippery.

Here are some gorgeous examples of how Travertine Pavers can be used:
