New Year – what are your plans?

The New Year is always an exciting time to create goals, make plans and to try to better oneself. If you are a homeowner, then you probably have a few ideas of updates you want to make to your home. If enhancing your backyard or boosting your curb appeal is on that list – then updated hardscape might be something to look into in 2019.

What is hardscape?

Hardscape is any type of solid surface that makes up your outdoor space. This can be anything from walkways, to steps, driveways, pillars or mailboxes. Many times people neglect to look past the beat up and dated hardscape that makes up their home. Think lava rock on the face of a home built in the 60’s and you’ll get the idea. Not that we have anything against lava rock, but if you are wanting a more sleek and updated exterior look for your home, then that rock needs to come off and pavers could be put in their place.

Pavers in the last decade or so have become incredibly popular. As a result, people are looking for paver hardscape when they purchase a home. Unlike concrete, pavers will last for decades (think the streets of Europe). If you have any plans to sell your home, pavers are a great option and you might as well enjoy their beauty before you sell.

Here are some great examples of how pavers can update your home and make a drastic impact!

Trim with color!

In our last blog we talked about the wide array of colors, styles and textures that are available when selecting the perfect paver for your home. In this blog, we will be discussing how paver ribbon can bring your pavers to life, add visual interest and also help define spaces.

Contrast…

While pavers come with a beautiful selection of colors, like a frame, paver ribbon creates a contrast and distinction. Typically, paver ribbons are darker in color and provide a color contrast with the other tones that are used.

Defining spaces…

If you have a large backyard that will have areas for specific entertaining purposes, then paver ribbons are a great way to help define areas a bit. Take a look at this semi circle seating area for example (see image below). Obviously this space is well defined, but the paver ribbon creates an outline from the rest of the backyard and very subtly leads the person into the area.

Here are some great example of how pavers ribbons have been used to provide contrast or define a space!

Creative expression with pavers!

If you are sold on pavers and now are just looking for ways to incorporate them into your outdoor space, then this blog is for you. One of the things that we love most about pavers is the tremendous flexibility they offer. For example, no matter the architectural style of you home, or intended purpose, there is a paver for you! If your home is more European in style, then cobblestone pavers are perfect! If you are looking for clean and modern lines – there is an endless selection of styles. In addition to the style choices, there is an endless selection of colors and textures. If your home has more cool tones, then you can choose from stunning grays with hues of blues. If your home is more warm, then there is an equal amount of selection of browns, taupe, creams and reds to choose from. In our experience, we have never worked with a client who couldn’t find a type of paver they absolutely loved!

Once you have the color and style selected then you can start looking at options for how the pavers are laid. The type of paver you select will have an impact on your options but an experienced contractor will be able to guide you. For example, if you select a rectangular shaped paver then you can choose from a brick lay pattern, herringbone or a more square pattern.

Here are a few examples of the different types of pavers, colors and option that are available.

Pavers for your pool area?

Let’s face it – pools are pretty much a way of life in Florida. They add value to your home but also create a wonderful space where your family can make memories and spend time together. For decades, concrete was the common choice of pool decking material. There are just a few things wrong with concrete.

It’s very slippery…

How many times have you told your kids to stop running on the wet pool deck? With a concrete pool patio, it is inevitable that at some point someone will slip and fall. In contrast, pavers have textured surface. So while it’s still probably not a good idea to run around on when wet, the texture allows for much more grip than a concrete patio ever would!

Pool maintenance…

If you have had a pool for any length of time, then you have probably at some point had a problem with your pool pump. With concrete, the only way to fix your pump is to jack hammer up the concrete, fix the pump and pour new concrete in it’s place. And of course, the concrete will never match and there will be seams. With pavers, it is very simple! All you have to do is pull up the pavers in the area you need to access, fix the pump and put the pavers back in place. It’s a much easier fix and when you are finished, there will be no unsightly seams.

And… I mean, how could anyone resist gorgeous pool patios like these!

What are turf or grass pavers?

You’ve probably seen turf or grass pavers – but may not have known what they were or what they are used for. Grass pavers while common are not nearly as popular as traditional pavers. But, they do have a very specific use and function. Grass pavers are very effective at preventing soil erosion. Additionally, their honeycomb design allow for water to penetrate through.

While they are called turf or grass pavers, they can be used to lock in any area of ground and don’t have to be filled with grass. If you live in an area that deals with soil erosion, then grass pavers could be a very attractive solution for you.

Here are a few examples of how grass pavers are used:

The Durability of Pavers

One of the best parts of summer is being able to spend time outside with your friends and just enjoy the outdoors. No one wants to spend their time maintaining their hardscape with sealers and cleaners. That is one of the reasons why we love pavers so much! Pavers unlike stamped concrete are individual pieces and require very little to zero maintenance. Pavers are jointed together by sand. This allows for them to flex when under pressure – you know what that means? NO CRACKING!

Every few years it is a good idea to seal your pavers, but for the most part their surface allows for dirt to naturally fall off. Despite the smooth surface of a paver, they provide a stunning visual element that few people consider – texture! Texture can really become a huge part of a design – and you won’t know how much it contributes until you add it. If you are looking for a stunning hardscape that will allow years and years of wear and tear while still looking beautiful, then pavers are the right choice for you. So next summer, spend less time “cleaning” your backyard space and more time enjoying it. If you would like a consult on your outdoor project to help determine if pavers are a good fit for you, we’d be happy to meet with you!

Why should I use pavers for my driveway?

If you have been watching HGTV or just looking around your neighborhood, you have probably noticed that in the last few years pavers have become a very popular choice for driveways. While there are a multitude of reasons for this, we are going to highlight a couple of what we consider to be the most important in this blog.

Curb appeal….

Especially if you are looking to update your home or plan on selling it in the future, few things will drastically change the overall look of your home like pavers. Think for a moment about your existing driveway… How does it look? Is the asphalt or concrete cracked? Black asphalt or colorless gray concrete do few things to boost the overall curb appeal of your home. Now consider beautiful pavers in a wide array of colors – either subtle or more dramatic. Think about how that will make your home literally “pop”. Hardscape is a way to transform the exterior of a home from one that seemed bland to one that feels warm and inviting.

Durability….

We talk about this a lot. And the reason is because this is such a HUGE feature that so many people overlook! Concrete and asphalt WILL eventually crack. It will also become stained and discolored. Pavers on the other hand are incredibly durable (in terms of weight bearing capacity) AND if they will never crack. The sanded joints allow for slight flexing in between the pavers which shifts the weight load – unlike concrete.

When it comes to selecting the right pavers – this is where you need to speak with an expert. Not all pavers are created equal and are suited for your purpose. Pavers are an investment, and taking a bit more time to speak with the right contractor can make a world of difference.
